There is no such thing as No Elections

There is no such thing as No Elections, says Rep. Alcover;
Maoist communist front organizations called to
support Charter Change

“It is the word of the administration as against the opposition’s,” said ANAD Partylist Representative Jun Alcover during a radio interview over Bombo Radyo – Davao, last week.

Alcover’s reaction came after reports saying that a No-El scenario is cooking-up, just in case the Con-Ass movement fails. Alcover said that the government already has issued a categorical statement that expressly assured the holding of the May 2010 elections. “In my own personal view, there must be an election because this political exercise is part and parcel of the democratic process that ANAD is strongly advocating and going all-out to protect,” he said.

“No-El is one of the black propaganda being disseminated by the Maoist communist groups who are masters of the art of deception through black propaganda. Their only ulterior motive is to sow confusion and chaos among political groups through some sectors who are usually vulnerable to their campaign,” Alcover pointed out.
On the issue of Charter Change, Alcover stressed that amending the constitution through Constituent Assembly or Con-Ass is the most economic and expedient way considering the present economic situation and the pressing needs of our country and people.

“Through Con-Ass, government will save hundreds of millions of pesos if we forego with the election for members of the constitutional convention; and the time spent in the campaign for con-con seats up to the proclamation of winners shall be done without,” Alcover stressed.

He urged the Filipino people to strongly consider the need to amend our constitution, the earliest time possible, to be relevant and responsive to the needs of the changing times.

“While it is true that we have a corrupt system of government where absolute power, authority, and sources of funds are very much centralized in the seat of national authority; corruption cannot be avoided. Let us not forget that absolute power corrupts absolutely,” Alcover said.
He clarified that if this power and funds are decentralized to the different regions or states that would be created under a federal system of government, “then we would be able to reduce greatly, if not eliminate altogether, corruption in the country. In this way, we could be able to respond, efficiently and with speed, to the needs of our people,” Alcover added.

“For the Maoist communist CPP-NPA-NDF and its entire surrogate front organizations who had been denouncing the government, since the time of Marcos until today, as corrupt, I call on all of you to support our move to amend the constitution to stump out corruption in the country,” Alcover urged.

Alcover said that he is optimistic that the Maoist groups will not respond affirmatively to his call because in the event the constitution is amended and the issue of corruption is resolved, “they will loose an important issue and shall have no reason to continue their anti-government protest actions, especially in the streets,” Alcover added.
